The Devil Made Me Do It?

[God] “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:” (Colossians 1:13-14)

God delivered us from the power of darkness (Satan, demons, sin) through the redemptive sacrifice of his son Jesus. Therefore, the Devil could never make us do it. If you are a Born Again child of God, filled with the Holy Spirit, the Devil (Satan) can’t touch you. My devotion today is a continuation of my last devotion (Blog). Last week I shared that we shouldn’t blame God for our trials and tribulations, and in this week’s Blog I share that likewise we should not blame the Devil. Again, if you are a Born Again child of God, filled with the Holy Spirit, the Devil cannot touch you.

The Devil can never have direct or indirect (demonic) control of a Christian. The Holy Spirit protects us from any such incursions. Demons can’t possess us and the Devil can’t control us. He can entice (tempt) us into doing things, the same way he enticed Eve to eat of the forbidden fruit, but he had no control over her. She made the decision to sin, disobeyed God (her creator), and chose her own path – as did Adam. The Devil can entice, tempt, seduce, but never control a true Born Again, Holy Spirit filled Christian.

On the other hand, the Devil can have direct control of a non-Christian (regardless of their religion or imaginary lack thereof). His demons (fallen angels) can possess anyone that isn’t filled with the Holy Spirit. If you are one of these people, you have no defense. If you’re one of these people, you are a slave to sin, and inadvertently or overtly, serve Satan. That’s not a curse or insult, it’s just a fact. Fortunately, if you are already serving the ole’ Devil, he will probably leave you alone. If you’re fornicating, lying, baring false witness, committing adultery or perpetrating any of the other sins against God, you are already serving the Devil. You are already his slave, doing exactly what he wants you to do. Christians can fail God in all of these ways too, but it’s by their own stupid choice. They are not slaves to sin; by their sinful nature they just transgress periodically. Non-Christians, in my opinion, are only controlled or demon possessed when they are deep in sin or “on the fence” in their decision to follow Satan and our current decadent society, or follow Christ. That is simply my opinion though. The rest of what I’ve written is Biblical. But, it does stand to reason that if you are already serving Satan, that ole’ Devil, he will probably leave you alone.

We make choices every day. God blessed everyone with free will and as Christians we choose to do right or wrong, but as non-Christians the powers of darkness have a say in the choices “you” make. Folks, it all comes down to serving Satan or serving God – being a slave to Satan and sin, or being truly free, with all our sin (past, present and future) forgiven and our own free will to guide us. You don’t even have to follow the will of the indwelling Holy Spirit – you should, but it’s not a requirement. You can never truly be free until you are a Christian.

Don’t blame God and don’t blame that ole’ Devil either. If you’re a Christian, you are redeemed and freed from the power of darkness. Sin no longer controls you, you have control – right or wrong, you make the decisions.
