The Bible teaches in Romans 13, 1 Peter 2, Titus 2, and other scripture that we must obey those appointed above us, whether that’s a boss, governor, or president. We are to follow their rules and laws. But God’s Laws always take priority. This priority is hence the reason that dictatorial governments hate Christians. It is also why the “New World Order” cannot come into being while Christians are still on earth.
If a rule or law, from a person in authority above you, requires you to break one of God’s commandments or precepts (laws), you MUST choose to obey God. God’s laws always, always, always take priority.
Why Obey Governments but Understand God’s Higher Law?
Titus 2:9-10 clearly calls us to obey because it shows that, as Christians, our obedience brings honor to the Lord Jesus Christ. In other words, it shows the world that we are not an unruly mob. Similarly, in 1 Peter 2:13-15, it says we need to obey the ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake. Furthermore, Romans 13:1-2 says, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.” So, if you just took these verses, and carved them out of the Bible, it would seem that we should just blindly follow these rulers. But that is far from the truth!
Out of Biblical Context Submission to Governments
We, as Christians, are called into obedience to a higher law. We are to obey the full counsel of God. In other words, we are to obey the Bible as the inspired, inerrant, infallible Word of God. If you carve out pieces of the Bible, you can literally make the bible fit any ideology. You can make it sound like other religions. You can make it sound liberal or conservative. Further, you can make it force you to obey tyrannical rulers with personal agendas or allow you to obey God’s Higher Law. Case in point, we are not to condone abortion even though it is legal, specifically because abortion is the premeditated murder of another human being. Exodus 20:13, “Thou shalt not kill” (Murder). We should obey God’s Law because it supersedes the laws of man.
We are Under God’s Higher Law
In Romans 13:10-14, Paul continues his letter to the Romans. He says we should “cast off the works of darkness” as we pursue a humble life of sanctification. He concludes this passage with “make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” So, in our obedience to God’s Holy Word, we should be humble of spirit and not do anything that is specifically self-centered or temporal. But it does not say to blindly follow leaders that are stripping you of your God given rights as a human being. These rights are why you need to read the entire Bible and apply the whole Bible in every situation. Acts 5:29, "Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men."
Obey Governments but Understand God’s Higher Law
That being said, I believe in peaceful civil disobedience if God’s Law is being trampled upon. “They are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Thomas Jefferson. I believe that our lives are being unduly disrupted due to the tyrannical, and dare I say, fascist rule of our elected officials. I believe our government officials are unduly limiting our liberty. Further, our pursuit of happiness is also being oppressed. So, do I believe that we should riot in the streets? No, certainly not! But do I think we should just bow down to tyrannical rule and taxation without representation? No, certainly not! God gave us the right to obey His Higher Law. Therefore, I’m going to vocally and in writing condemn this Covid-19 debacle. It is nothing more than the dictatorial seizing of power!
Obey Governments but Understand God’s Higher Law Because it has a Purpose
If you understand anything about the End Times (eschatology), you understand that all these evils must take place. Even those in power understand this simple fact. They believe that the New World Order cannot exist if Christians are present on earth. They feel that we are what’s holding everything back. They Are Right!! We are the only thing staying the inevitable one-world government, one-world religion, and the advent of the Antichrist. Why? Because we are commanded by God to be salt and light. To add flavor to this tasteless world and be the light of God shining forth in the world’s spiritual darkness.
Ecclesiastes 12:13
“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
The following are just a few quotes from the recent past that lend credence to my concerns. We need to obey God’s Laws first, and then the laws of man. The laws of man that don’t conflict with God’s Laws.
